Research Interests

Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Perumal's current research interests are focused on computational solutions to gene regulation problems in higher organisms, particularly in the area of transcriptional control mechanisms. His expertise is in studying mammalian immune system genes during development with an emphasis on transcriptional regulatory networks. He is also interested in neural system transcriptomics. In this research, he employs computational tools such as pattern search algorithms, data mining techniques and supervised and unsupervised learning modalities.

Before joining the School of Informatics, Dr. Perumal had teaching assignments at Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University at Tallahassee, Florida. He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Biology, Information Systems, Informatics and Bioinformatics. In collaboration with the Molecular Biology Program of New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, New Mexico, he has designed and developed a module-based Bioinformatics course made available in the public domain . This course can help a beginner level student to learn at her/his own pace the fundamentals of Bioinformatics with hands-on training exercises.

Dr. Perumal serves as a thesis advisor to the MS and PhD students in Bioinformatics. He is the recipient of a NIH-BRSG Award and a NIH-RCMI Junior Faculty Development Award.
